Swim Groups

Sycamore Flying Fish Group Descriptions

Senior Group
The Senior Group focuses on training and competition preparedness with stroke development and drill work as a secondary part of the program. Practices are offered 6 times a week with two hours of water time and additional dry land, stretching and/or weight training. Early morning practice attendance is expected as availability allows. Swimmers in this group are ages 13 & over, and all by invitation only.

Senior Prep
Senior prep swimmers are ready to step up their training intensity. This smaller group shares practice time with both the Senior and Junior practice groups. This allows for more yardage some days, with a larger focus on technique other days. Senior Prep practices are offered 6 times a week with one and a half hours water time and additional stretching and dry land. Early morning practices are also offered to this group. Swimmers in the Senior Prep group are 12 & over.

Junior Group
Junior Group swimmers have made the commitment to year-round competition at the U.S. level. These swimmers have learned all four strokes, but continue to the mastery level through drills and coach direction. As stroke work takes a moderate step back in this group, greater intensity is added to practices. Practices are offered 5 times per week for one and a half hours with additional dry land and stretching. Most swimmers in this group will be age 11 and older, with few select 10 year olds.

Green Group
Green group continues a focus on stoke development, with a minor introduction to training. Practices are offered 4 times a week for one hour and fifteen minutes. Dry-land training and stretching will be introduced throughout the season. Swimmers in this group include those ages 8-12, although 8 year olds in this group are likely advanced and experienced for their age. 12 year olds included in this group are often new to year-round training.

Yellow Group
Yellow group focuses on stroke development through drills and coach teaching. Training is introduced and advanced as stroke skills develop throughout the season to allow for progress and competition achievement. Practices are offered 3 times per week for one hour. Coaches introduce stretching at this practice level and may elect to add dry-land activity during the season. Swimmers ages range from 7-10 years with the occasional advanced 6 year old. Competition in U.S. level meets is expected starting at this level.

Mini Fish (NEW GROUP for the club in 2009!)
This group offers an introduction to year-round swimming with an intense focus on stroke development. Practices are offered 3 times per week for thirty minutes each. Swimmers in this group are most often age 8 & under. Competition in U.S. level meets is not expected of this group, but is an option as swimmers advance in their stroke technique.

High School swimmers:
Swimmers who are in high school and on the Fish have many flexible options when deciding whether to train and/or compete with their high school programs. Those who choose to swim for their high school programs may decide to train only with their team during the school swim season and resume training with the Fish at the conclusion of their school swim season. Others may choose to continue to train primarily with the Fish while competing at the high school level. For those swimmers, flexibility is provided so that they can meet the requirements of their high school coaches while maintaining the consistency of their year-round training and stroke development. Swimmers training with the fish will still be prepared (tapered) as needed to accommodate their high school season and competitions while at practices with the Fish.
